Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Tennessee

At Xplore Recovery, our mission is to help individuals find direction, camaraderie, and a “compass in recovery” through an integrated, trauma-informed healing journey. Because many people struggling with addiction also carry untreated mental health concerns, our dual diagnosis approach is central to how we deliver care. Situated along the scenic Ocoee River and drawing on the therapeutic power of nature, our model weaves together high-quality clinical care, evidence-based interventions, and adventure-based supports to foster stability, resilience, and lasting recovery.

Our Treatment Program

What Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment—and Why It Matters

“Dual diagnosis” (also called a co-occurring disorder) refers to the presence of both a substance use disorder and one or more mental health disorders (such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, or others). Because each condition can worsen the other, treating only addiction without addressing mental health (or vice versa) leaves clients vulnerable to relapse, symptom escalation, and unresolved emotional pain.

At Xplore Recovery, we believe that truly effective care means treating both sides simultaneously—not sequentially or in isolation. Our integrated approach ensures that mental health and addiction are addressed together, in coordination, from day one.

Supportive Environment

Our Tennessee Setting: Where Healing Meets Nature

Xplore Recovery is anchored physically in Tennessee, leveraging the natural beauty and therapeutic potential of the Ocoee River. Our program serves clients from Chattanooga, Nashville, and Atlanta, offering accessible care across the region.

While we do include adventure therapy elements (rock wall climbs, zip lines, white water rafting—the best east of the Mississippi), it’s important to emphasize that clinical treatment remains our primary focus. Insurance typically does not reimburse adventure therapy, so the page you’re viewing underscores the rigorous clinical side of what we provide. That said, we do employ a certified Adventure Guide / Course Manager on staff, so that when clients are clinically ready, those experiences become opportunities for growth, metaphor, and integration rather than just recreation.

Levels of Care & Clinical Pathway

Our clinical continuum is structured to support clients at every stage of recovery:

PHP → IOP

We begin with Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care, providing structured, daytime clinical programming while allowing clients to live in a supportive environment. Under this model, clients attend daily therapy, group sessions, psychiatric care, and skills training.

Step-Down & Aftercare

After residential care, clients may progressively step down—returning to PHP, then IOP, then outpatient support and alumni/community recovery. Throughout, our clinical team continues to monitor and enhance mental health care, manage medications, and support relapse prevention planning.

Because our approach is integrated, dual diagnosis treatment is woven through every stage—meaning mental health assessment, therapy, and stabilization remain active regardless of the level of care.

At Xplore Recovery, we help individuals find their compass & chart a new course toward healing, fulfillment, and freedom from addiction.

Individualized Care For Your Unique Needs

Clinical Elements of Dual Diagnosis at Xplore

Here’s how Xplore Recovery delivers robust, integrated dual diagnosis care:

Comprehensive Assessment & Diagnostic Clarity

Upon intake, every client undergoes a thorough clinical assessment, including psychiatric evaluation, substance use history, medical screening, and trauma assessment. We screen for mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, personality concerns, and more. The goal is to arrive at clear diagnoses that guide a cohesive treatment plan.

When indicated, we maintain an on-site or contracted psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who works collaboratively with the addiction treatment team. Medication is managed carefully and thoughtfully, considering both the substance use and mental health conditions concurrently. Stabilizing medications (antidepressants, mood stabilizers, SSRIs, anxiolytics, etc.) are monitored continuously and adjusted as clients progress.

We deploy evidence-based therapies proven effective in dual diagnosis settings:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address both addictive thinking and maladaptive coping in mood/anxiety disorders
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to manage emotional dysregulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness
  • Trauma-informed therapy and EMDR (if applicable) to help clients process traumatic experiences that underlie both addiction and mental health symptoms
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) to engage ambivalence and enhance readiness for change
  • Group relapse prevention, psychoeducation, and peer support groups that integrate mental health topics (for example, mood management, coping with triggers, co-occurring relapse dynamics)

Rather than operating addiction and mental health teams separately, Xplore Recovery assigns integrated treatment teams that meet regularly to coordinate care. The plan addresses the interplay of substance use and mental health symptoms (e.g. how anxiety triggers relapse, or how substance use compounds depression). Therapists, psychiatrists, medical providers, and case managers all contribute to a unified treatment roadmap.

As clients progress (or regress), treatment is dynamically adjusted. This includes:

  • Titration of psychiatric medications
  • Shifts in therapy focus or intensity
  • Additional crisis interventions during emotional destabilization
  • Proactive screening for relapse risk or emergent co-occurring symptoms
  • Use of objective measures and progress tracking to guide adjustments

Because many clients struggle to understand the interplay between mental illness and addiction, Xplore offers intensive psychoeducational modules:

  • Understanding co-occurrence: “Which came first?”
  • Recognizing warning signs of relapse or symptom flareups
  • Coping skills for anxiety, depression, mood swings
  • Self-management tools (sleep hygiene, nutrition, mindfulness)
  • Emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and grounding techniques

Clients leave not just with sobriety, but with a mental health toolkit for lifelong self-care.

Xplore Recovery’s facility features 16 men’s beds and 12 women’s beds, allowing us to maintain a relatively small, focused, and therapeutically coherent environment. Our culture is built around direction and camaraderie, emphasizing peer support, relational safety, and structured community.

While we pride ourselves on a truly unique, experiential program, the heart of our offering is clinical excellence. Adventure therapy is complementary—not the foundation. When clients are clinically assessed as stable enough, our certified Adventure Guide may lead them in challenge-based activities (rafting, ropes course, zip line, rock climbing) to reinforce growth themes like risk, trust, boundary, and resilience. But those experiences always circle back to clinical processing—the “what did I feel? What triggered me? How do I apply this in life?” —not just thrilling fun.

What Sets Us Apart

Why Choose Xplore’s Dual Diagnosis Program?

  • Fully integrated treatment: Mental health and addiction are treated not side by side, but intertwined.
  • Experienced staff: Clinical, psychiatric, and adventure staff collaborate closely to support every client’s growth.
  • Beautiful, nature-based setting: The Ocoee River location supports serenity, restoration, and metaphorical growth.
  • Flexible access: Clients from Chattanooga, Nashville, and Atlanta can access care without traveling cross-country.
  • Clear stages of care: From PHP to residential, we provide continuity and stepping-down of services as clients stabilize.
  • Peer support and culture: With smaller capacity, we emphasize relationships, accountability, and shared purpose.
  • Adventure as metaphor, not gimmick: When appropriate, experiential tools add depth and embodiment—but not at the expense of core clinical work.

Outcomes & Expectations

Because each client’s journey is unique, no one can promise a fixed timeline. But clients entering with both addiction and mental health disorders often face longer treatment curves and higher risk of relapse if untreated. By integrating both domains:

  • Clients have lower relapse rates because untreated mental health does not continue to drive substance use
  • Mental health symptoms (anxiety, depression, PTSD) become more manageable
  • Clients leave with skills, neural rewiring, and resilience rather than mere abstinence
  • Through adventure and nature, clients internalize growth metaphors and become more connected to life, purpose, and community

Our small capacity (28 beds total) allows intensive individual attention, therapeutic culture, and safety oversight—meaning we don’t treat like a mass factory but as a healing sanctuary for transformation.

How To Get Started & Insurance

To begin, a prospective client or loved one can contact our admissions team. We assist with insurance verification, psychiatric history review, and coordinate necessary medical or referral information. While we emphasize clinical coverage (PHP, IOP, residential, psychiatric care), Xplore staff can also help determine whether adventure elements (even if out-of-pocket) might be gradually introduced once clinically stabilized.

Because dual diagnosis treatment often involves care that insurance does support (therapy, medications, residential), we work actively to navigate benefit coverage, authorizations, and billing so clients can focus on healing—not paperwork.
